Working in practise I have many patients asking me for remedies for insomnia, heart palpitations, anxiety and depression. This has forced me into research trying to find the best herbs, vitamins, amino acids and foods which can combat these symptoms and then use these ingredients and make a product which can combine all these magical ingredients together.

After countless hours of research I found what I believed to be the best ingredients to help combat these symptoms with the end goal of this product to improve a persons quality of life reducing symptoms of stress and making people feel better everyday.   1. Adaptogens(e.g. ashwagandha and rhodiola) They are best used for chronic anxiety and depression rather than for panic attacks (acute anxiety) and work well for adrenal fatigue or insomnia as well.

    Adrenal fatigue is a disorder that is associated with a variety of symptoms, including fatigue, light-headedness, body aches, and low blood pressure. When your adrenal glands can’t work properly, mostly due to chronic physical and mental stress, you start experiencing the mentioned symptoms. Adaptogens should be taken daily, over a period of 3 months to a year for optimal results.

  2. Ashwagandha is present in Real Sleep and can significantly reduce the symptoms of anxiety, and has been shown to improve cortisol levels by resetting adrenal-associated stress, overall reducing your predisposition to anxiety. Adaptogens do not work overnight. They are best taken daily, not “as needed”, to reach full effectiveness.

    Ashwagandha helps balance hormones that contribute to anxiety and depression as well as helping induce relaxation . A number of studies support the effectiveness of the herb as a natural anxiety & depression remedy. In 2012, a study found that patients diagnosed with anxiety disorder showed significantly lower anxiety and 28% lower levels of serum cortisol when taking Ashwagandha as opposed to a placebo. 

  3. Rhodiola is another ingredient in Real Sleep The bright yellow-green plant is also known as golden root or roseroot. Rhodiola is an adaptogen herb and is the second-most-consumed in traditional medicine. As an adaptogen herb, it can have a direct effect on your stress levels and ability to control and manage stress. The herb has been shown to have beneficial qualities in the relief of anxiety symptoms. Rhodiola encourages calmness and relaxation as well as being a natural stress reducer.
  4. L-theanine is an amino acid we added into Real Sleep derived from green tea. Able to cross the blood-brain barrier, at recommended doses it safely imparts a sense of calm and well-being, reduced mental stress and anxiety, and improves memory and cognitive function. It may interact with GABA and dopamine receptors in the brain, explaining its actions. While it is found in tea and coffee, the supplement allows you to get the benefits without the caffeine – which worsens anxiety for many.
  5. 5-HTP works in the brain and central nervous system by increasing the production of the chemical serotonin. Serotonin can affect sleep, appetite, temperature, sexual behavior, and pain sensation. Since 5-HTP increases the synthesis of serotonin, it is used for several diseases where serotonin is believed to play an important role including depression, insomnia, obesity, and many other conditions. It may also be helpful for digestion and gut motility.
  6. Bacopa monnieri is an ancient herbal remedy that today has proven benefits. It may help improve inflammation, reduce ADHD symptoms, and prevent anxiety and stress. Bacopa monnieri has been used by Ayurvedic medical practitioners for centuries for a variety of purposes, including improving memory, reducing anxiety, and treating epilepsy. One study in 31 children aged 6–12 years found that taking 225 mg of Bacopa monnieri extract daily for 6 months significantly reduced ADHD symptoms, such as restlessness, poor self-control, inattention, and impulsivity in 85% of the children. Research suggests that Bacopa monnieri helps reduce stress and anxiety by elevating your mood and reducing levels of cortisol, a hormone that is closely linked to stress levels. One rodent study showed that Bacopa monnieri had anti-anxiety effects comparable to those of lorazepam (benzodiazepine), a prescription medication used to treat anxiety.
  7. Kanna (sceletium tortuosum) is a plant in the Mesembryanthemaceae (succulent) family that’s used to make herbal treatments and supplements. The most well-known benefit of kanna is promoting relaxation and helping relieve anxiety symptoms, feelings of stress and depression. It seems capable of promoting a sense of well-being in healthy individuals and also helping treat clinical anxiety and depression. Researchers believe that kanna works to reduce anxiety by mechanisms including inhibition of PDE4 and inhibition of reuptake of 5-HT. In other words, it impacts neurochemicals in the brain that turn down the body’s reaction to stress and threats. Kanna may work similarly to SSRIs, which are widely used for the treatment of anxiety disorders and depression. In fact, because it has similar effects to SSRIs plus it’s a PDE4 inhibitor, it’s been argued that kanna may have synergistic therapeutic effects that are even better at fighting anxiety. Because it can lower stress and calm the body and mind, kanna can potentially help you sleep better and have more daytime energy. Some people claim that it reduces fatigue and improves alertness and reaction times, although this use hasn’t yet been studied extensively in humans. Historically, the kanna plant was also used b to quench thirst and for healing, social and spiritual purposes.
  8. Black pepper is one of the most commonly used spices worldwide. It’s made by grinding peppercorns, which are dried berries from the vine Piper nigrum. It has a sharp and mildly spicy flavor that goes well with many dishes. But black pepper is more than just a kitchen staple. It has been deemed the “king of spices” and used in ancient Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years due to its high concentration of potent, beneficial plant compounds. In particular, it has demonstrated potential benefits for symptoms related to degenerative brain conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. For example, a study in rats with Alzheimer’s disease found that piperine improved memory, as the distribution of piperine enabled the rats to repeatedly run a maze more efficiently than rats not given the compound.
